In Search of 'The Man From Beyond'

As previously announced on John Cox's blog 'Wild About Houdini' (here), over the next few months I'm hoping to track down some iconic images and locations related to Houdini's film The Man From Beyond.

With portions of the film's climax shot in my backyard of Niagara Falls, NY, I'll have easy access to Niagara Falls State Park and it's surround areas. While all of the lower hiking trails are closed for the winter season, I do have some prime potential leads and locations to track down as soon as the weather breaks. I can't wait to get started!

In the meantime, here is a little sample of what is to come:

The above picture is that of the iconic Houdini film crew on location at Prospect Point at Niagara Falls, superimposed with a shot I took of the location as it is today. Even though Niagara Falls State Park has experienced significant changes over the years, I believe this is the exact location the picture was taken close to 100 years ago.

Taking a closer look at the original photo, I used the Ontario Power Company building (which luckily still stands today) as a landmark reference to line up to two shots. You can see the long, windowed building on the bank of the Lower Niagara River, right behind the cameraman at the far right in the original photo. Today, there is a binocular viewing station in almost the exact spot of that cameraman.

With this location nailed down, I'm working on something special to commemorate this spot in anticipation of the 100 year anniversary of The Man From Beyond. More to come on that front soon!
